In the distant past the islands of Cres and Lošinj used to be one island. Later, because of the needs of maritime trade, they were divided by a channel and connected with a bridge at the town of Osor.

The oldest settlements on the island (Lubenice, Osor, Beli) have more than 4000 years old history. In the 9th century Roman town of Osor was the Bishopric seat.

By the 19th century Lošinj developed into a leading regional maritime power, and Mali Lošinj was the second most important port on the Adriatic after Trieste. The people of Lošinj were not only appreciated as good shipbuilders, but also as the best sailors at the Mediterranean.

The beginnings of tourism on the island date back to 1885 when medical and health tourism started to develop on the island. In 1892, thanks to exceptional climate characteristics, the Ministry of Health of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy pronounced Lošinj a climate health resort. Soon, Lošinj became one the favourite destinations among the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy who have built numerous villas and summer residences on the island.
