So why not adopt a dolphin!

Already in 1987 a team of the Research Institute Tethys started a long and intensive research of biology, ecology and social structure of the community of dolphins that colonize the sea around the islands of Cres and Lošinj. Today these dolphins are one of the best explored groups in the whole Mediterranean. There are 120 individuals, and most of them are identified thanks to natural marks such as cuts and scars on their back fin, the part which is always seen when they come out to the surface to breath the air. At the beginning of the nineties of the last century  the Research Institute Tethys has established a research station on the island of Lošinj. The research is devoted to bottlenose dolphins that inhabit the area of about 900 km² which extends from the coast of the island of Lošinj to the island of Cres. Since 2001 the project has been coordinated by the Croatian association Blue World.

The 'Adopt a dolphin' is a public awareness campaign where people are invited to participate in dolphin protection and make a donation to the project. In return, as a sign of gratitude, the adopters receive a package with adopter's diploma, photo of the adopted dolphin with informational text and annual publication of brochure Akvamarin that describes projects of the Blue World.

Visit the marine education centre Blue World in Veli Lošinj and opt for a boat trip to observe dolphins (boat ride in the reserve with the possibility of observing and photographing. The encounter with dolphins is not guaranteed). Dolphin reserve near the island of Lošinj is the first in the Mediterranean and it represents a habitat for a population of 120 dolphins, species Tursiops truncatus (bottlenose dolphin).
