Highlander
Get ready to embark on an unforgettable hiking experience across the island’s most breathtaking landscapes.
DAY 1
The adventure begins in the historic town of Osor on Cres Island, where you’ll cross the Kavuada channel, a site steeped in cultural heritage
From there, the trail leads into Lošinj’s rugged karst terrain. On the way to the peaks, we come across the Sveti Gaudent mountain lodge. It is a former Italian military watchtower that was converted into a mountain lodge by the Alpinist society Osoršćica from Mali Lošinj. It is named after the medieval Osor bishop and saint who died in 1050. According to legend, he lived as a hermit in a cave below peak Televrin. The house offers a wide view on three sides, and thanks to the distance from the settlement and the lights, it is also used for observing the starry sky at night. It is a recommended location for a break and refreshment.
DAY 2
The trail shifts from mountain ridges to the island’s dramatic shoreline, covering a 14.5 km route from Ćunski to Rt Vila. Though the elevation gain is modest (155 m ascent, 218 m descent), the terrain demands focus, with stretches of rocky “škraping” (scrambling) along the karst coastline. Here, the Adriatic is always at your side - waves crashing below, salty air filling your lungs, and unbroken views stretching across the sea.
From Ćunski, you’ll pass by Torać, an ancient olive mill - the only one of its kind on the island - still operating in its traditional way. The route winds beneath Tovar Hill, a military-restricted area for over 160 years, adding a touch of mystery and history to the journey. As you approach Privlaka, a narrow stretch of Lošinj Island (just 80 meters wide), you’ll cross the canal that separates the island’s two halves. Here, an iconic movable bridge opens at specific times each day to allow boats to pass through - a fascinating spot on the route that gives you a glimpse into island life.
The final stretch leads you through a series of enchanting bays, each one a tranquil escape with sparkling water and hidden coves. As you reach the trail’s end at Rt Vila in Veli Lošinj, the beauty of the journey will linger, capturing the raw, unfiltered essence of the island and leaving you exhilarated for what’s still to come.
